Well, I loved it until it was stolen this week... August 7, 2008 We bought ours three months ago because my husband is from Sri Lanka and is not the best with getting around. To my surprise, I ended up using it and loving it too. We moved to a new city and it became even more useful. Well, we always hid it in the console between the seats but stupidly left the mount on the window. $670 later we have replaced our smashed window but not yet the GPS (it was so expensive because they leaned on the glass to break it and caused the window regulator to bend. Who knew?). Considering the hassle of NEEDING to remove the mount every time, we're going to go with the slightly more expensive (only $150 here on Amazon) TomTom One model that has mount built-in. If you buy this model, you MUST remove and hide the mount every time. Keep this in mind! It's worth the extra $6 for the S model...it's smaller too, by the way.
Good, but not excellent August 7, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Since a lot of people already gave detailed reviews, I'll just go with pros and cons: Pros - Easy to use (never even opened the manual so far) - Cheap - Has 2D, 3D and several compass options, helping a lot people without sense of direction (like my wife)
Cons: -Several names of locations are different than normal names (Instead of Ellacoya State Park, you can find it as State Park-Ellacoya State Park) This makes it difficult to find things sometimes. Other state parks are missing. - There are several streets not in the map in New Hampshire, streets that are more than 5 yrs old. - I had read this before I bought it, but I hate the autozoom function on it. Why can't they let me lock the thing in the zoom I want?
For the price, I guess you can live with the cons..
The perfect GPS unit for under $200 August 6, 2008 I bought this unit when it was on sale for $140 (usual price is $200) at a local retailer. Took it home and had a heck of a time opening up the packaging which is made to stop thieves from breaking it open in the store... I turned it on and found that it already had a charged battery (very nice touch) and it asked me for my home address (so that it could sync up with the satellite for navigation). Next thing you know I am up and running!
I had to go to a family garthering that day and decided to let the TomTom direct me there (even though I knew where the place was). I attached the suction cup to the windshield and the TomTom took me all the way to the front door. I even made a wrong turn on purpose to see what would happen, without a hiccup it directed me to where I should be. I actually brought the unit inside with me to show my family. My mom was so impressed she asked if I would buy one for her the next day, which I did. (To which my Dad remarked "Thanks for making spend $140 dollars!")
Fast forward a few months and I am using this thing all the time. I go to Sandy Hook pretty much every weekend in the summer and the TomTom has been a blessing. They are doing construction on the bridge right by the beach and it takes forever to get on the Northbound side of Rt 36 coming out of the park. If you take the Southbound lane it's a lot quicker but you go through Rumson which I'm not familiar with. So as soon as I got over the Rumson bridge I powered up the TomTom and before you know it I was on Rt 35 and on the Garden State Parkway on my way home. I also have to mention that there were really no signs on the roads to show me how to get to the highway, so I would have been driving around for a while and would have had to stop and ask directions without it. (Also considering the price of gas these days it's nice to have something that will save you from wasting it driving around in circles)
One of the things I really like about it is that it will tell you your estimated time of arrival from where you are. A nice touch if you want to figure out how long it will take to get to a destination. (Great for making sure you're not late to a first date, or job interview).
It comes with a lighter plug so you'll never run out of juice on the road (A note, I find that the unit will work for about 60 mins before needing to be recharged or plugged into the lighter socket). You can also plug it into the USB port on your computer at home for recharging the battery.
I also hook it up to my Mac once a week and download map changes to keep it updated. That service is free for the first year I believe.
All in all, for the money you really can't ask for more. This is a simple yet effective GPS unit that anybody (even my Mom!) can use and enjoy! Go out and buy one now!

Time saver August 5, 2008 I got right to my destination. Much of the time it just sits on the shelf, but when I need it, I can count on it to get me there. One thing I really like is if I go off my planned route, the GPS will redirect me back on track. I can program it ahead and turn it on when I leave. One time I turned it on and the battery was dead, so I plugged it into the car cigarette lighter and it worked fine. It tells what time you should arrive at your destination and readjusts the time if you stop or are held up in traffic. I've only had one problem with it. At the end of a trip I turned it off about 5 miles from home because we didn't go right home. Next time I used it, it repeatedly wanted to finish that trip. Somehow I managed to clear it, after much time and effort. I thought I would have to drive back to where we shut it off and finish the trip. So now I just leave it on until I get home. I'm glad I bought it because sometimes you just have to be somewhere on time, or in my case you just have to get somewhere without driving through 5 states.
Good Product August 4, 2008 I bought this product for replacement when i bought a new vehicle, my other vehicle had a built in navigation. the thing i am most dissapointed about is that they advertise that the current traffic problems and gas station prices will be viewable. however they fail to mention that this requires an additional peice of equipment that cost over 150 dollars. as for the navigation itself it is great. has a few bugs, but is better than any other GPS i have dealt with. it is very user freindly and easy to understand. would reccomend to someone with basic navigational needs like myself.
