Amazon.co.uk Review The continued survival and huge commercial success of the Red Hot Chili Peppers may come as a surprise to some but Off the Map finds the band in fine form. Recorded live on the last night of their all-conquering Californication world tour, the set veers from the funkadelic-influenced rock that made their name to the more mature, thoughtful side that has always underpinned their work. Thus "Suck My Kiss", "Blood Sugar Sex Magik", "Right on Time" and "Me and My Friends" are all franticly funky, but the band are far more effective on the elegant sweep of "Californication", "Scar Tissue" and the classic "Under the Bridge". Despite their advancing years, the Chilis still ensure a high level of performance--the visuals are a mass of swirling limbs and instruments while the crystal-clear sound is dominated by Flea's pulsating bass. On the DVD: Off the Map presents an image of the band--sipping herbal tea backstage, practising yoga and talking about their kids--that's a far cry from their reputation for hard living. As with any concert material extras (plus post-tour interviews) there is a tendency to slip into Spinal Tap mode, particularly singer Anthony Keidis, but the four come across as eminently likable. The five extra music tracks include a searing version of the Stooges' "Search & Destroy" but best of all is the subtitles option, giving us the opportunity to work out just what Keidis has been singing about all these years. It's not a pretty sight! --Phil Udell

One of the best live music DVDs ever.... May 1, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
First up for all those people mentioning the continuity problems on this DVD - it was filmed over two nights ! Anthony's hair changing, Chad's hat, John's pants, etc, etc, etc. The footage was was taken from two concerts and the best bits were picked out and spliced together to create an absolutely amazing live music DVD. That aside, let's get down to the performance itself. Amazing. Astounding. Brilliant. I've been to a great many Red Hot Chili Peppers concerts over the years in several different countries and even more cities, and since they toured the crap out of 'By The Way', their live performances have started to lose some of the frantic energy that us long time fans are used to. Let's be honest though, John aside, the rest of the guys are 40+ !! Although I wasn't at this gig, it's one of the best shows I've seen them put on. I think this performance catches them at the peak of their 'live' careers. They still have the energy to put on a great performance, and their catalogue of songs is excellent - picking the best of everything up to 'Californication'. My collection includes all the RHCP DVD's, and this one is far and away the best. Highly recommend.
Brilliant music shame about the dvd! September 9, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Lets start off on the brilliant points! The music is fantastic, the band look and sound amazing and the goings on in 'Me and My friends' is hilarious! If you can enjoy the music without really concentrating on the picture on the tv then this dvd is brilliant.However...the continuity is appalling. It is shocking to think that this dvd was done in 2001 when there is no excuse for such obvious problems. The most glaringly obvious continuity errors are Anthony's hair and trousers and that sometimes the audio is out of sync with the picture. It wouldn't be too bad if you were able to ignore it but once you spot the problems you start seeing more and then the enjoyment of the music suffers. However I hate to leave it on a bad point so if you can successfully ignore these problems then you will be getting a very good dvd. Personally though I would not bother with this one and instead get 'live at Slane Castle' which is 100 times better!
WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! December 12, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Put simply, this DVD explains why the chili peppers are regarded as one of, if not the best live act around today. They are so tight and yet so very, very funky throughout the performance. Any bassist, or guitarist will be overawed by the musicianship, and anyone with any soul will be captivated by the chili peppers' boundless energy, and the seemingly telepathic connection that exists between Flea and John. To cap it all, the set list has all of their best material, and they sound even better live than they do on record. Buy this DVD. It will enrich your life. That is a promise.
RED HOT STUFF!!!!! January 24, 2004 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i brought 'Off the Map' the other day along with 'live at slane' and i have to say i prefer this one. Not only are their more songs and more features (like interviews, backstage and extra songs) but they include more songs of bssm, which is a great album, but these days they focus more on songs from californication and by the way. The fact that the footage is taken from different concerts doesn't bother me- you dont notice unless you focus on, say the colour of john's boxers, and i mean, why would you when you could be staring at anthony's supreme dancing or fleas amazing fingers! They look so great live and they have so much energy and enthusiam, even after over 20 years. Buy this, because it is great from start to end- especially the end, in me and my friends!!! it includes all of their best songs and this is a must ahve for any chili fan
Great Performance(s) July 15, 2003 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This DVD, as mentioned, captures the final night of the dominating Californication tour, putting the Chili's back on the map after the diabolical spell between Under the Bridge and the return to form after One Hot Minute. However, it isn't one show. Throughout the show, and even actual songs, the background changes from cloth, to televisions, to this unusual circular pattern, Chad (drums) repatedly appearsd without and then with hat, and starngely enough, John (guitar) underpants which protude from the top of his pants change colour. Don't let this deter you. Any doubts you had about the musical ability of this band can be easily expelled with this DVD, featuring stunning performances of classic songs such as Pea, Scar Tissue, Under the Bridge, Californication, Give it Away and many more. Also we see superb solos from all 3 instrumentalist, with Flea's ultra fast fingers delight the audience. The pure beauty of the Chili's stage performance is taken away from by the picture quality. This downfall, which stops it reciving full stars, is viewed as if been recorded on a home video recorder, colours fading into one another, and cannot be compared to more recent Music concert DVD's (Muse - Hullabaloo springs to mind as being superb quality). However, if you can forgive this, you are in for a real treat.
