I rented this DVD as I am a massive chili pepper fan and have their entire back catalogue so I thought it was about time I watched their dvds too. It has to be said I was a little disappointed. This dvd chronicals the making of BloodSugarSexMagik and I was hoping for a window into their world, to see the motivation behind the album. It's not the most insightful of DVDs however, and is basically just the 4 of them goofing around, it's rather funny to watch them giggling at times but not what I was expecting. It's basically split 50/50, with them recording/playing half the time and having their photos taken and talking heads the other half. If you want a chilipepper DVD, you can do no better than Live at Slane Castle!

The lack of colour turns what is, to be absolutely honest, a pretty average "fan-zine" type of presentation into something a bit more arty. Black & white filming makes the content more immediate and convincing - although this is ostensibly a fly-on-the-wall job, the band are obviously only too aware of the camera, even when not talking directly to it. The most interesting and poignant part of it, for me, is to see the beginnings of the disintegration of John Frusciante. So much younger than the others, and obviously living on his nerves, his subsequent decline into extreme drug addiction is only too understandable. However, he does talk a lot of pretentious b******t from time to time - notably saying that it is his responsibility as guitarist to see that Anthony gets laid every night! What is THAT all about?!!
Highlights are really watching the genesis of that superb album, especially all the percussion on Breaking the Girl - they knock ten bells out of drums, drainpipes, boxes and furniture - it's amazing. I also enjoyed the recording of "They're red hot" out in the garden. Now, when I listen to the track I wind up the volume, and yes - you can hear the cicadas and the traffic going past! The photographing of the band for the artist to do the cover drawings is cool, and just the general atmosphere of concentrated creativity is terrific.
Definitely a must for fans of the band, and in particular of Blood Sugar Sex Magic (and who isn't?!)

A great black and white video with the chilis chillin and recording blood sugar sex magik. Great songs and funny clips, you should buy it!

This a an amazing DVD and gives you more than just a catalogue of songs and interviews. The video has great depths and really gets out the true views and ideas of the band. The video gives you an insight to how they live and is a must see for all music fans, not just fans of the chili's

An Excellent Video for the real Pepper fans out there. Sure it is shot in black & white but anyone who ones BSSM should not complain about that (all the cover photography is B&W). The video is more about the band hanging out and the recording process than it is about the actuall music(in terms of getting to see them in a performance...), so it is an excellent chance for a behind the scenes look at the band. The Red Hot Chili Peppers show here why they are one of the best and hardest bands ever.
